Why did the Muslim world not come to dominate world affairs during this time period?
Topic Sentence
The Muslim world weren't able to dominate world affairs even at their highest peak because of their poor judgements in leadership succession.
Elaboration
Leadership succession is important because you would prefer the best for your country. In order to remain in power among the world, they must choose the right leader who could continue the success of the predecessor. In the West, the king usually gave his throne to his most ablest son. In China, the emperor gave his throne usually to his eldest son. Under this primogeniture system, the eldest son knew beforehand that he would receive the throne. This gave the eldest son time to prepare. However, in the Muslim Empire (Ottoman Empire, Safavid Empire, and Mughal Empire) the sons were uncertain about who would be the new ruler. As a matter of fact, the eldest or the most ablest son was often killed because the reigning king (Sultan) feared that they may take away his power.
Examples/Evidence
Explain specific evidence/examples for your 3 choices in your topic sentence.
1. The declination of the Ottoman Empire started when the Suleyman killed his most ablest son and gave his throne to his third son who had trouble handling his role as a ruler. He gave his throne to his third son in fear of losing power to his most elderly and ablest son who was much more powerful and stronger than the third son. This was very selfish of Suleyman because he didn't think about what was best for the empire but what was best for himself.
2. The declination of Safavid empire started when
3. The declination of Mughal Empire
Explanation/analysis
This unique succession method of not picking the ablest son or the eldest son eventually lead the decrease of Muslim world. The successors needed long time to adjust to their new roles and they showed immaturity and bad judgement as the Empire was beginning to fall under their hands. Not only did they lack experience but they will also had poor decision making skills.
Link Sentence
Therefore, despite the many achievements of the 3 Muslim empires (such as allowing religious tolerance, cultural blending, and accepting outside ideas), the succession problem gradually contributed to the decline of the empire.
